suspends service between Europe and Asia
GRAND Alliance, a leading
integrated consortium in global container shipping, has suspended
its EU5 service between Europe and Asia with immediate effect on
Friday due to waning customer demand resulting from the global
The suspension would be in force
until June 2009, it said in a statement. The consortium members are
Hapag-Lloyd, MISC Bhd, NYK and OOCL.
The weekly service had been
operated by eight vessels, with an average capacity of 3,300 20ft
equivalent units (TEUs).
Ports of call have been Shanghai,
Ningbo, Xiamen, Singapore, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Southampton,
Singapore and back to Shanghai with a round voyage time of 56 days.
Grand Alliance, however, said it
was still offering a variety of services between Europe and the Far
East, covering all major port pairs with weekly sailings.
Customers using the EU5 service had
several alternative options as the mentioned ports were among others
covered by EU3 and EU4, it added. — Bernama
