Grand Alliance suspends service between Europe and Asia

GRAND Alliance, a leading integrated consortium in global container shipping, has suspended its EU5 service between Europe and Asia with immediate effect on Friday due to waning customer demand resulting from the global economic gloom.

The suspension would be in force until June 2009, it said in a statement. The consortium members are Hapag-Lloyd, MISC Bhd, NYK and OOCL.

The weekly service had been operated by eight vessels, with an average capacity of 3,300 20ft equivalent units (TEUs).

Ports of call have been Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen, Singapore, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Southampton, Singapore and back to Shanghai with a round voyage time of 56 days.

Grand Alliance, however, said it was still offering a variety of services between Europe and the Far East, covering all major port pairs with weekly sailings.

Customers using the EU5 service had several alternative options as the mentioned ports were among others covered by EU3 and EU4, it added. Bernama
